My name is Julie and I am currently completing a major in microbiology & immunology with a minor in food & resource economics at the University of British Columbia. I will be travelling to Masaka, Uganda this coming January and will be volunteering with The Aids Support Organization (TASO), an indigenous HIV/AIDS organization, for three months.
My interest in going to Africa lies in my desire to pursue a career in Public Health. Through my education, I have developed a strong academic background in the science behind diseases but would like to bridge this knowledge with associated social and cultural perspectives. In short, I would like to incorporate my passion with my education and future career with being an aware and participating global citizen. |
I have chosen to go with the International Service Learning program at UBC. This program stood out for a number of reasons. For one, it is heavily focused on educating participants, it includes preparatory and post-placement components designed to challenge and prepare individuals for the placement. It is personalized to the participant in that it matches the needs of the local community to the strengths and interests of the student. Lastly, it is a sustainable initiative, where long-term projects are continued by future student groups.
I am really excited (and a little scared!) to embark on this adventure but ultimately, I hope to be inspired, bewildered and awed by my experiences there! |
